What can you do with kids in central Reading on a rainy day? Try Reading Museum! Located in the Town Hall, Reading Museum is walking distance from the train station and close to the main shopping streets. It’s got several floors of interesting family-friendly rooms to explore and best of all, it’s free!
Things to do
Pick up one of the explorer bags on the way in (free to borrow) and have fun rummaging through to find items like binoculars, magnifying glasses, picture bingo and activity cards. There are lots of interesting rooms to explore. On the ground floor, look for the Box Room with microscopes and interesting specimens. There is a hippo skull as well as displays of items that have been found in local gardens. On the first floor, there are loads of biological and geological specimens including stuffed birds, animals and skeletons to look at. Another room has an interesting display about the Romans area and you can try dressing up in historical costumes.
Special Events
There is Tales for Tots story time for Under 5s every Wednesday from 10.30 – 11.30 and lots of fun activities in the school holidays. Check out Red Kite Days Events pages for more details.
Café
Palmers Café on the ground floor sells Fairtrade tea and coffee, cakes and snacks. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am – 4pm. There is also a gift shop there.
