Jonathan Self is a leading portrait photographer specialising in families and children, branding and entrepreneurs and weddings and engagements. He is also the founder of the online photography course for children, Cultivating Wonder.
He has worked with hundreds of families in the past five years as well as with leading high-street brands including with M&S.
Jonathan is a massive advocate of wonder and specialises in taking beautiful, authentic portraits based around the theme of “story” to reveal the beautiful and genuine connection that exists. He believes that everyone is beautiful and worthy of being photographed and that everyone has a story to tell and it’s what drives him in his work, photographing someone’s truth. He loves hearing people’s stories and capturing such stories on film and believes that photography can act as a liberating force within this process – allowing people to own their story and be empowered by it.
Jonathan’s way of photographing families is fairly unusual, normally spending the first few minutes of a photoshoot asking questions of the children such as “who is your best friend and why”, “when was the last time you felt happy or sad” and “what do you love the most about mummy and daddy”. These are designed to build a sense of rapport and to get a child to trust Jonathan and to be empowered and made to feel special – showing them that they matter and that they have a place within this world.
He lives on the edges of Oxford and in his spare time loves pilates, yoga and running and spending one month of the year in an old French chateau.
