Balloon Top Tin Can Drums

Tin Can Drums are an easy musical instrument you can make for kids.  They look great, don’t cost the earth and you can have a lot of fun.  Kids will have fun experimenting  with how the sound changes depending on where you hit the tin and how you hold them.

This fab idea and all the photos were kindly shared by Emma who runs Musical Me.  Her fun, educational and sociable classes take place in Witney and Yarnton in Oxfordshire.

Emma says these homemade tin can drums for kids are so simple. “I actually made these ones while the baby bottles were sterilising!”

What You Need to Make Tin Can Drums

  • Scissors
  • Balloons
  • Tin cans of various shapes
  • Elastic bands (but I didn’t really need these so don’t worry if you don’t have them).
  • Something to use as a beater (a wooden spoon will do!)

How to Make Balloon Top Tin Can Drums

  • Snip the bottom off of the balloon (the thin bit).

  • Stretch them over the tin.
  • Possibly fasten them in place with elastic bands (but not necessary I found).
  • Let your drummer at them!
  • Supervise them at all times during this activity as balloons could be pulled off etc.
