5 tips for Post-Christmas clean-up

Christmas is a wonderful and exciting time of year, full of fun with family and friends. And let’s be honest, who wants to be dealing with chores while you’re celebrating? You can leave the real cleaning up until after the festivities are over, and our five top tips for a post-Christmas clean-up will help you get the job done.

  1. Carefully take down your Christmas tree and decorations

The more careful you are taking down your Christmas tree and decorations, the less clean up you’ll have to do. Ripping baubles and tinsel off the tree is only going to lead to needles and glittery strands piling up on the floor, so take your time.

In addition to saving yourself the cleaning time, carefully putting away your decorations will save you time the following year – tangled lights anyone?

  1. Clean the neglected areas

During the holiday season it’s fine to just keep things tidy, and clean the really necessary areas, like the kitchen, bathroom etc. Once it’s all over, though, you can get back to thorough cleaning and that means hitting the neglected areas. Pull out your furniture, lift up rugs and get into those corners… this is the time to check for stains too.  If you want to clean your floor better and safe for your surroundings in the house, consider investing in a steam mop cleaner, such as these from unclutterer, that doesn’t need any floor cleaners and cleans up only using hot water.

While you’re in a cleaning mood, it’s a great time to polish all those mirrors and bring the shine back. Here’s how to clean a mirror:

  1. Start by cleaning the frame, as this part is often missed.
  2. Using a damp piece of kitchen paper or a cloth, wipe off the excess dust and grime on your mirror.
  3. Pick your cleaner, squirt it on and polish.
  4. Use a dry piece of absorbent kitchen paper to give your mirror a final buff.

That’s how to clean a mirror covered, so let’s move onto the oven.

  1. Clean your oven

The oven gets plenty of use during Christmas, but the last thing you want to do is spend your time worrying about the mess. Wipe down obvious splatter and drips by all means, but leave the real work for after the holidays.

As part of your post-Christmas clear up, a proper oven clean is paramount. It’s probably going to take a little elbow grease, but it definitely needs doing.

  1. De-clutter

New Year, new start, and all that! Seriously though, this is the ideal opportunity to de-clutter and start afresh. So, take the opportunity to go through each room in your house and have a good clear out, whether it’s recycling or storing items in the loft – after all, the odds are you’ll be heading up there to put the decorations away.

  1. Clear out your fridge and freezer

Just like your oven takes a bit of a hammering over Christmas, your fridge and freezer are in pretty constant use too. Again, you don’t want to worry too much about cleaning it while everyone’s having fun, but after Christmas is the time to do so.

Take everything out so you can wipe down spills in the fridge and check expiry dates. This is also a good time to defrost your freezer and give that a good clean too.
